Virtual Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Event Features Local Charlotte survivor

Event highlighting need for increased awareness and prevention

Charlotte, NC —Courage to Continue is organizing Speak Up, a virtual domestic and sexual violence awareness and prevention event on October 26, 2020 via Zoom.

Hosted by NBC Charlotte investigative reporter Nathan Morabito, the Speak Up webinar will feature panelists Rachel Brummert, Jamie Sellers from Safe Alliance, Sergeant Scott Evett and Addie Auman from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, and Holly Jones from the North Carolina Department of Justice.

Brummert, a survivor herself, created the Speak Up webinar series to raise awareness and show the community that they’re not alone.

“When I was going through it, I didn’t feel safe talking about it. I thought that the domestic violence I suffered was my fault, and I certainly didn’t know that there is a link between domestic violence and martial rape. After I left the relationship, I found my voice and I want to help others find theirs” says Brummert.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The goal of Speak Up is to raise awareness about domestic violence and its link to sexual assault, educate communities on how to prevent it and bolster prevention efforts throughout the year.

“Bringing awareness and education to domestic and sexual violence is extremely important, because it is the only hope we have for truly putting a stop to it. Domestic and sexual violence can occur to anyone and it is important to know and understand that it does not discriminate. The effects of abuse are devastating to our community and the more that we can educate each other on the topic, the more lives we can save,” adds Jamie Sellers, director of victim assistance court program at Safe Alliance.
